DARKE COUNTY — A barn on state Route 503 at Hursch Road was destroyed Sunday after it caught fire.
Crews responded around 5 p.m. to the blaze that temporarily closed state Route 503 between Hollansburg-Arcanum and Dull roads while firefighters worked for roughly three hours to contain the flames.

A tractor and 40 bales of hay were damaged, but no one was injured.
This is the third fire at a Darke County farm within two weeks.
“We have to move 150 to 250 gallons a minute of water to be effective on any fire and when trucks only haul a couple thousands of gallons, they go through that pretty quickly,” Arcanum Fire Chief Kurt Troutwine said.

The fires have created more of what’s already been a difficult season for area farmers.
“That is their livelihood, that is how they make their money, that is how they live their lives,” Troutwine said.
