Mechanicsburg Middle School students lay wreath on Tomb of Unknowns

Four Mechanicsburg Middle School students were selected to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Thursday in Washington, D.C.

The students were Brookelyn Moore, Payton Murphy and twins Jenna and Natalie Tull. All are eighth-graders and were chosen based on essays they submitted.

The students on the trip only involved Mechanicsburg Middle School. They left Champaign County on Tuesday and are due back late Friday, said Jamie Pull, mother of the twins.

The four students selected to participate in the ceremony found out two weeks before they left.

"It was awesome," Tull said of her daughters. "I was very proud to have both of them selected.”

Tull said her daughters had been looking forward to the annual eighth-grade trip since they were sixth-graders. "Once they found out they both get to lay the wreaths, they were both excited about that," she said.

Cherie Moore, mother of Brookelyn, said the winning essays were related to social studies.

The trip, she said, also involves sightseeing and other educational opportunities such as a Friday morning tour of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
