CENTERVILLE — A teacher at W.O. Cline Elementary in Centerville is among 11 educators named “2020 Teacher of the Year” by the Ohio Department of Education for their respective state school board district.
Matthew Szozda is teacher of the year for State Board District 3, which encompasses Montgomery, Miami, Preble, Butler and part of Darke County.
Szozda is an art teacher at Cline.
“Ohio has so many amazing teachers who commit themselves each and every day to the success of our students," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria said in a prepared statement.
"I'm proud to recognize these teachers for their accomplishments and for the excellence they represent,” DeMaria said.
Teachers were nominated by school administrators, fellow educators, parents, students and community members.
An Ohio Teacher of the Year will be named after a panel of education and community stakeholders interview the State Board district awardees.
The state superintendent will announce the statewide honoree this fall. The Ohio Teacher of the Year will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year selection in spring 2020.
