Shot fired during Middletown road rage incident

A Middletown couple remain behind bars following arraignment on felony charges stemming from a road rage incident that resulted in a shooting in the parking lot of a local restaurant.

Jessica Payne and Chase Harris appeared Wednesday in Middletown Municipal Court, where Judge James Sherron set bond and scheduled a preliminary hearing for next week.

Harris, 24, of the 3200 block of Beatrice Drive, is charged with felonious assault and endangering children. Payne, 24, also of the Beatrice Drive address, is charged with attempted felonious assault and attempted child endangering.

The judge set Harris’ bond at $210,000 and Payne’s at $155,000.

Harris and Payne were involved in a road rage incident with another driver Monday night, according to Middletown police. Both vehicles pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant in the 3500 block of Dixie Highway at about 9:40 p.m. and then a fight ensued.

Harris got a gun from his vehicle and fired one round, hitting Charles Howard, 43, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

The couple had two children, ages 1 and 3, in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The restaurant manager recorded the incident and called police.
