A fire at a vacant two-story duplex on Oxford Avenue is being investigated as suspicious.

Fire crews encountered smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure shortly before 8 p.m. at the building in the 400 block of Oxford.

No one was injured. A neighbor told fire officials that the duplex, which has a third attic level, has been vacant for about five years, said Dayton District Chief Scott Rowlette.

An investigator is on scene looking into the cause of the blaze, which could be an arson as the building is not getting electric or gas service, Rowlette said.

“The house next door is an occupied structure. That’s our main concern is to protect the homeowners near the fire, Rowlette said.
