Bonded composite airframe structures offer a potential to achieve more affordable manufacturing and more efficient structures, ultimately meeting the goals of the Air Force for increased range and reduced fuel consumption.
Laser bond inspection (LBI) in conjunction with bond process control is an enabling technology to transition primary bonded composite structures and realize these goals.
Composite structures, when joined using adhesive bonding rather than traditional rivets or fasteners, require a new inspection process to verify the strength and safety of the composite bonds.
LBI is a stress test to ensure that adhesively fastened structures are joined correctly using a bond’s response to a high-energy pulsed laser generated stress wave to detect structurally substandard bonds.
A weak, improperly prepared bond will be broken by the pulse, but a standard bond will remain unchanged after pulse excitation. Substandard adhesive bonds can result from errors created by poor adhesive mixing, improper surface preparation or contamination.
LBI is the only reliable and mature method capable of assessing the integrity of adhesive bonds in composite structures and detecting kissing bonds, a bond line defect where two surfaces are in intimate contact but are not properly bonded.
“This effort is a significant progression of more than a decade of collaboration and development work by the U.S. Air Force, The Boeing Company, LSP Technologies and additional major aerospace original equipment manufacturers,” said Andrea Helbach, Structures team lead in Air Force Research Laboratory’s Materials and Manufacturing Directorate.
“However, it is far from finished. On-going efforts will prove the technology on multiple representative aircraft structures and prototype a fiber optic delivery system to increase device reach.”
Future work in this technology area includes analyzing data for bond integrity in the field. Tests also need to be done to define a wider gamut of materials, thicknesses, and joint designs so the technology can be expanded to other platforms. Additionally, hardware improvements must be made to the laser bond inspection unit for usability in a manufacturing environment.

HOUSTON, TEXAS — A 13-year-old boy was arrested after leading Houston deputies on a high-speed chase that lasted more than 20 miles in a stolen vehicle.
It was not until the teenager crashed the vehicle that officials discovered he was only in the sixth grade, Houston-based television station KTRK reports.
The chase began after the teen was spotted going 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. Refusing to stop, he jumped on and off several Houston highways reaching speeds up to 100 miles per hour. He eventually made his way downtown, where he crashed.
The chase took a turn when a pursuing deputy crashed into another vehicle. The deputy and driver of the other vehicle were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 13-year-old driver, who was not cooperative with detectives in telling them where he got the stolen car, was arrested and faces felony charges.
His name was not released because he is a juvenile.

— An Air Pollution Advisory is in effect today for Butler, Clark, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Warren counties for smog.
With temperatures expected in the upper 80s with abundant sunshine and light southerly winds, conditions will be conducive for the formation of ground-level ozone, or smog, and may lead to elevated air pollution levels, according to the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency.
Children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion. Symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem. Residents should contact their health care provider if any of these symptoms occur. The general public is not likely to be affected, according to the agency.

DAYTON — A man got into a physical altercation with at least one Dayton police officer and pepper sprayed the official, prompting a ‘Signal 99’ officer assistance call early Friday morning.
A police report states officials arrested Aaron Goings, 26, in the 100 block of N. Wright Avenue after being dispatched on a suspicious circumstance call around 1 a.m.
Goings, who was reportedly injured as a result of the fight, was transported to Grandview Medical Center.
No word on his condition.
He is not currently listed on the Montgomery County Jail website at this time, but the report states his charges include assault, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, possession of drugs, and possessing a drug abuse instrument.

ORLANDO, Fla. — From now through July 4, U.S. veterans and up to three guests can get free admission to SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay as well as other SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment properties across the U.S.
SeaWorld said in a news release that this new offer joins the ongoing Waves of Honor program that offers complimentary admission to any U.S. active duty military, activated or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman once per year, for the military personnel and as many as three direct dependents.
Veterans must redeem their complimentary single-day ticket(s) online at www.WavesofHonor.com. The free tickets are available online only, not available at the front gate for each park.
In addition to SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, the free admission offer is available at SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg.
