A former Special Forces officer and author will be the guest speaker for the 21st Air Force Marathon in September at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
Ivan Castro was selected to address the audience at the various ceremonies. He is a highly decorated former officer who lost his eyesight while in combat in Iraq in 2006.
Castro had to go through a 17-month rehabilitation of which he returned to duty and became the only blind Special Forces soldier in service. He retired in 2016.
Castro has completed more than 80 marathons and hiked 200 miles across Antarctica. He also co-authored a book about his life titled Fighting Blind: A Green Beret's Story of Extraordinary Courage.
"We are so excited to have Ivan as our guest for this year's race," said Air Force Marathon Director Rob Aguiar. "He has such an inspirational story and has overcome so much. I think runners are going to enjoy hearing what he has to say."
The Air Force Marathon will be held Sept 16.
Wright State University will host the Sports and Fitness Expo at the Nutter Center Sept. 14- 15. A Gourmet Pasta Dinner and Breakfast of Champions will be featured in the even.
Castro will speak at the Sports and Fitness Expo Breakfast of Champions and at the Gourmet Pasta dinner.
