— Why not skip the calorie-heavy mistakes of yesteryear, and put something a little skinnier into our cups this winter?
With these eight skinny holiday cocktail ideas, you can celebrate in style, but without having to buy stretchier pants come the new year.
Jot down these skinny holiday drinks recipes that will bring a bit of jolly to your holiday season.
Sangria is a great choice for any holiday because it's light, refreshing and versatile. Simply substitute seasonal fruits to match any time of year.
Ingredients (6 drinks)
2 Honeycrisp apples, chopped
1 bartlett pear, chopped
1 orange, sliced
¼ cup pomegranate seeds (or cranberries)
2 cinnamon sticks
1 (750 ml) bottle favorite white wine
2½ cups fresh apple cider
½ cup vodka
1 cup club soda
Directions: Put the chopped apples, pears, orange slices, pomegranate seeds and cinnamon sticks into a large pitcher. Pour the wine, apple cider, and vodka in over the fruit. Mix well, and allow to sit for several hours, or overnight. Just before serving, add club soda.
If there is a flavor more autumn than pumpkin, or a cocktail more classic than the martini, we're all ears.
Ingredients (2 martinis)
2 tablespoon sugar
6 tablespoons vodka (use vanilla vodka for extra punch!)
4 tablespoons half and half/light cream ( use white creme de cacao for a really decadent experience)
2 tablespoon canned pure pumpkin puree
2 tablespoon maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
A dash of ground nutmeg (for garnish)
Powdered graham cracker (for the rim)
Directions: Dip the rim of a chilled martini glass in water, then dip onto a plate of powdered graham cracker to coat. Fill a shaker with ice and add all ingredients except nutmeg. Shake well until chilled. Strain into martini glasses. Sprinkle ground nutmeg on top for garnish.
White Chocolate Pumpkin Nog

Pumpkin to celebrate the passage of fall. White chocolate and eggnog to welcome the holidays. Skinny as a gift to yourself.
5 cups light vanilla soy milk
1 small package instant sugar-free white chocolate pudding mix
3/4 cup 100% pure pumpkin puree
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Rum (to taste)
Directions: Combine ingredients and whisk until smooth. Refrigerate for 2 hours before serving to chill and thicken. Garnish with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Hot Chocolate Martini
Because baby it's cold outside.

Ingredients (1 martini)
3 ounces prepared hot chocolate, cooled (I used packaged Swiss Miss Sensible Sweets Diet Hot Cocoa, but any packaged or homemade will work.)
3/4 ounces dark crème de cacao
3/4 ounce vanilla vodka
1 ounce Kahlua
6 mini marshmallows
Directions: Chill martini glasses in freezer. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice. Add in cooled hot chocolate and liquors; shake for 30 seconds. Pour into martini glass. Roast marshmallows over a fire if possible, and drop into the drink for garnish.
The Ginger Snap

The fruit your body needs, the sage and ginger it deserves. Light and sophisticated.
Ingredients (1 serving)
2 ounces Peach CÎROC
1 piece ginger
4 sage leaves
0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice
2 ounces soda water
Directions: Put the ginger and sage in a shaker. Muddle, then add lemon juice and CÎROC. Pack with ice and shake. Strain into a Collins glass and top with soda water. Garnish with a sprig of sage.
Raspberry Rum Mule
Take your ordinary Moscow mule, and give it a little taste of the holidays, swapping vodka for spiced rum and adding raspberries to taste.
Ingredients (1 serving)
2 ounces of rum
½ lime, juiced
1 teaspoon agave nectar
½ bottle of ginger beer
½ cup of ice
Directions: Fill a cocktail shaker with rum, lime juice, agave nectar, raspberries and ice. Shake mixture until ingredients are married together. Add mixture to a serving glass then top with ginger beer. Garnish with raspberries and rosemary.

2 cups skim milk
1 cup creme de menthe
1/2 cup Godiva chocolate liqueur
Directions: Stir all together. Serve chilled.

— We’ve seen this movie before.
Here we are again, prostrate on the couch with a head pounding from excess alcohol and heavy dehydration. Somehow, we lost ourselves last night between a bottle of red wine, or one too many Fireball shots, or the random Long Island Iced Tea.
Though it feels like we’ll never revive, there are ways to beat back the hangover beast. Your local bartenders have many tricks up their sleeve – they are, after all, used to nursing their customers — and themselves – back to health.
We asked a few of our neighborhood bartenders their most effective techniques. May they serve you well.
Vitamin Water, miso soup, Chinese buffet, booze
Amber Brady serves up delicious (and dangerous) cocktails at Lily’s Bistro, and offered up her step-by-step process for recovery:
“For me, hangover remedies are an intricate ritual of as many 'cures' as I can possibly ingest,” Brady said. Try one, some or all of the following with her recommendations:
"Revive" Vitamin Water. "This is a must. This purple potion is packed full of B vitamins, potassium and electrolytes. All things your body is begging for. If the store is out, shed a single tear and get another flavor; however, Revive is where it's at."
Coconut water. "Tons of electrolytes and hydration goodness. Just pound one. Sure way to get some moisture back into your poor dehydrated body."
Miso soup. "I know the sodium is a throw off here, but it actually helps you retain water. Lots of good vitamins and minerals here too, plus it's just a feel good soup."
Tons of water. "You should be drinking water throughout your boozy adventures, but let's be real, that rarely happens. So at the very least, chug as much as you can before bed. Then chug one more glass. When you wake up, drink it all day. Force yourself. After your Revive and coconut water, of course."
Food. "Once you can eat, feed the beast. When the battle of the hangover comes to the point where I can eat, I eat tons of food. Preferably Chinese buffet, or if I'm not capable of removing myself from my cave of shame, get Chinese delivery. Go all out. You’re going to need to eat it like three times that day."
The classic hair of the dog. "This isn't always possible, especially if you are also nursing a 'shameover' and you've done or said things that will not allow you to be seen in public for a few days. However, if you can, my go-to hangover booze is a shot of whiskey, a beermosa, or at Lily’s, we offer the fine cocktail ‘Corpse Reviver #2,’ (made with Citadelle gin, Lillet blanc, lemon juice, orange liqueur, Pernod rinse, and Luxardo cherry garnish). However, it comes with the warning that too many will just put you back where you started. It's delicious and one or two of these really does help ease the pain!"
A little bubbly could do the trick
Corner Kitchen bartender Callie Young admits that she is “terrible at being hungover.”
“I usually just lay in bed all day,” she wrote. “If I do drink, it is champagne with grapefruit juice and then some Taco Bell.”
Food and lifestyle blogger Tess Vella-Collette, also a contributor to Dayton.com, gave a rundown of her hangover cure routine.

— To us in Dayton, king cake may seem like a bit of a novelty. However, those from or living in the Gulf Coast area take it very seriously.
Commonly enjoyed on Fat Tuesday -- which will be celebrated on Feb. 13, 2018 this year -- the origin of the king cake goes back to Biblical times as part of the celebration of the Epiphany, celebrated on Jan. 6. Its popularity spread across Europe as a Christmastime delicacy before making its way to North America.
French settlers brought the recipe to the Gulf Coast in the 1700s, where the cinnamon-flavored treat was later associated with carnival season.
King cake recipes have transformed into various forms over the centuries, with a small baby doll being included somewhere inside the cake itself to symbolize the birth of Jesus at parties.
Tradition holds that the party guest who gets the piece of cake with the doll in it will be blessed with good fortune and be crowned the king or queen of said party. But royalty has its obligations as well, as the winner must provide the king cake the following year.

— With all the fad diets out there, it's hard to know what to eat in the morning.
Although some experts suggest that eating a low-carb diet could help you lose weight more quickly, some carbohydrates are actually good for you and can give you the sustained energy you need to get through the day.
According to Clemson University, a nutritious breakfast contains small amounts of protein and fat, with the bulk of the meal consisting of complex carbohydrates, like whole grains. If you've been shunning carbs in order to drop a few pounds, but feel lethargic and exhausted by lunchtime, adding a few back into your diet could give you the nutritional boost your body's craving.
Add these carb-filled foods to fuel your morning:
Whole-grain bread with protein
Switch your morning white bread to a healthier, heartier, whole-grain counterpart, and add a little protein and fat, like peanut butter, almond butter, mashed avocado or an egg, which will give you more energy and leave you feeling satisfied for hours.
Loaded old-fashioned oatmeal
The soluble fiber in slow-cooked, old-fashioned oatmeal actually helps slow down how fast your body absorbs carbohydrates. This keeps your blood sugar levels more consistent and even throughout the day. Instead of having it plain, load your old-fashioned oatmeal with nutrient-dense foods, like chopped nuts, berries, chia seeds or hulled hemp seeds.
Whole grain cereal with fruit
Starting your day with a bowl of cereal might seem like a no-no, but it's all about which cereal you pick. Avoid sugary, refined cereals, and pick out a whole-grain cereal high in fiber, low in sugar and big on vitamins. Top your bowl off with some fresh fruit that's high in antioxidants, such as raspberries or blueberries, and you'll have an early morning winner.
Homemade breakfast sandwich
Although a breakfast sandwich from a fast food restaurant might not provide you with the energy-filled morning you're hoping for, making your own homemade breakfast sandwich just might. Start with a whole grain English muffin, which contains complex carbs that digest slowly in your system, topped with an egg, leafy greens, fresh tomato and cheese.
