The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer sent a reporter and photographer to Davidson’s Belk Arena on Friday — and they weren’t there to chronicle an important Atlantic 10 game.

The paper wanted to talk to Dayton Flyers coach Archie Miller about the North Carolina State job that will open at the end of the season. Miller’s alma mater announced earlier this month head coach Mark Gottfried will not return. According to a report by a North Carolina television station, N.C. State reached out to Miller. N.C. State denied that report. Miller also said he has not been contacted.

Miller talked to local media in Dayton about the reports on Feb. 16. He wasn’t exactly happy to see the News and Observer on Friday, especially with his team in the stretch run of an important season, but he did answer the reporter’s questions after an 89-82 overtime victory at Davidson.

Miller was asked how he has handled the distraction of the N.C. State situation.

“As a player, to stay focused, I was always taught to be a day-to-day guy,” Miller told the News and Observer. “As a coach I've tried to do it the same way. We have a special group of guys that have been here from the beginning, so for me to spend any time on anything other than them would be unfair.”
