— A grand opening event for the new Wilmington-Stroop branch of the Dayton Metro Library will give the public an opportunity to get a first look at the state-of-the-art facility.
The grand opening event will be Saturday, June 1, from 1 - 4 p.m. The new branch, which will begin regular hours Monday, June 3, is 50 percent larger than the previous library, which closed in December 2017 and was demolished.
Among the new amenities are a community room accessible before and after hours, a reflections-themed children’s area and dedicated TeenEDGE space, a quiet reading room, a fireplace, outdoor patio, numerous public computers, industrial grade WiFi, laptop lending, a vending area, and four original art installations.
“This branch has something new and exciting for everyone to enjoy, but one of the highlights that I think people will notice right from the start is the wonderful natural light filtering in through all directions,” Branch Manager Mike Hensel said in a release. “It truly is a welcoming beacon to the area.”
Visits with Cosmo and Pip, the library mascots, a storybook dollhouse interactive exhibit and light refreshments and music will be part of the fun at the opening. The branch library is located at 3980 Wilmington Pike.
A special quiet tour of the new library will be held Wednesday, June 5, from 8:30-9:30 a.m., an hour before the library opens to the public.
“We’ve set aside this time to give our patrons with sensory needs the opportunity to explore and experience all the new features of their library without the crowds and noise we anticipate during our first few weeks back in business,” said Melissa Sokol, children services librarian.
