NEW YORK — Emma Stone hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and the cast had plenty of joke material, taking aim at actress Lori Loughlin, attorney Michael Avenatti and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
But Saturday night’s show was about BTS, the first K-pop band to play on the long-running show, The New York Times reported.
The seven-member group became the first K-pop, or Korean pop group, to crack the Billboard 200 album sales chart last year, Rolling Stone reported.
Saturday night, the group -- J-Hope, Jin, V, Jungkook, Jimin, Suga and RM -- performed “Boy With Luv” from “Map of the Soul: Persona,” their new album; and also “Mic Drop,” CNN reported. “Boy With Luv” already has been viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Their fans, known as ARMY, were in full force on Twitter and Instagram during the band's two performances, with Dazed writer Colleen Nika summing up the enthusiasm by tweeting BTS “crushed it.”
“That’s how you say, ‘What’s up America?’” Nika tweeted.
I've been watching SNL since the late '70s til I stopped watching in the 90s. Never seeing an Asian face on their staff always stung. But tonight I just saw 7 Korean faces gracing that damn stage and it was the best part of that show so I AM OVER IT. #BTSxSNL— Paul Bae (@MrPaulBae) April 14, 2019
I'm so tired, but I want to watch @nbcsnl in real time, so I'm going to enjoy a piece of chocolate cake from @portilloshotdog with a hot cup of coffee. That should keep me awake until breakfast time! @BTS_twt performing on the show is historic. Can't wait!— Jae-Ha Kim 김재하 (@GoAwayWithJae) April 14, 2019
Live band. Killer vocals. Moves for days. Crushed it! That’s how you say “what’s up America?” #BTSxSNL— Colleen Nika (@colleennika) April 14, 2019
