GREENVILLE — Wayne Healthcare is working on a major expansion and renovation at its hospital campus in Greenville.
The Darke County hospital is starting construction on a project that includes a new 3-story addition.
Wayne Healthcare held a groundbreaking on May 21 and stated that the expansion includes a 32-bed nursing unit with fully private beds. The nursing unit will be “acuity adjustable,” so patients won’t need to be transferred to different settings as they recover.

The 75,000-square-foot expansion also includes a new “Special Beginnings” birthing center, which will have two antepartum, four post partum and six labor and delivery rooms.
A May 24 building permit filed by Trinity Planning Design & Architecture estimated the hospital addition to be a $40 million construction project.
Besides the new addition, the project also includes renovation work at the rural, independent hospital.
The hospital’s loading dock and material management area will be redesigned with improved access. The hospital will get a new entry and public concourse linked to the existing main lobby. The renovations also will mean expanding its Lifestyle Enhancement and Wellness Center.
The first patient in the new addition should be seen late 2020 and the total project will be complete spring of 2021.
Nine years ago, Wayne Healthcare completed another major expansion, which was a $47 million, 3-story addition.
