A seasonal significance to Halloween

There is more to Halloween than the cute costumers and sweet treats.

In fact, there is astronomical significances to the date, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Carrieann Marit said.

Oct. 31 is approximately halfway between the fall equinox and winter solstice.

The four seasons start with either an equinox or solstice, which is dependent on the earth’s orbit around the sun.

In traditional astronomy, each season is then subdivided by a halfway point. The two most recognizable are Groundhog Day and Halloween.

Groundhog Day falls halfway between winter and spring; Halloween marks the halfway point between fall and winter.
