Daylight, temperatures increase ahead of spring

Spring doesn't officially begin until the vernal equinox around 6:30 a.m. March 20.

Until then, we will still be dealing with winter weather. Even though this week has felt more like spring, a pattern shift heading into February might remind us again that winter isn't over, said Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

A piece of good news though heading through the rest of the month is that we have passed our "coldest" time statistically speaking of the year.

Our average high temperature in the Dayton area drops to its lowest during the middle of January coming in at 34 degrees. As of Jan. 17, we will now start to see our average high trending upward. By mid February it will be close to 40 degrees, Zontini said.

“We can also look forward to a slow increase of daylight as well,” she said.

The length of the day on Jan. 19 is about nine hours and 47 minutes. By Feb. 19, it will be around 10 hours and 54 minutes.

Since last week we began to gain more than one and a half minutes of daylight a day. The amount of daylight added to each day will increase reaching its peak near the end of March.
