I am absolutely thrilled that my dream of working in network news has finally come true and is right here at the top rated CBS affiliate in the country, WHIO-TV! You’ll see me out in the field reporting, as well as at the anchor desk, filling in when needed.
I came to News Center 7 from sunny and warm southern California, where I spent several years working part-time as a freelance reporter and weekend sports anchor at a small, city-owned cable station. Prior to that, I spent 15 years in sales and Executive Management in the healthcare industry. Specifically, the medical device field, where my days were spent in the operating room assisting physicians with our products. So, how does one go from selling medical devices to television? It all goes back to a warm, late-summer night in September of 2005.
A friend of mine had asked me to fill in doing play by play for a local high school football game that was to air on the local cable station. Having never done anything in live TV before, I hesitated, but decided it could be fun and reluctantly agreed. From that night on, I knew that working in live television was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It was truly a life changing moment as a passion was born!
Although I’ve spent the last 14 years in southern California, I have lived through some cold winters, having grown up in Allentown, PA and attending Penn State University, where I earned a degree in business administration.
When I’m not working, I enjoy going to concerts, the movies, playing tennis, competing in triathlons, traveling, exploring new restaurants and especially, spending time with my family and our Labrador Retriever, Chloe. As we’re new to the Dayton area, please feel free to contact me on Facebook or Twitter with suggestions on great restaurants or things to do, as I’m all ears! I look forward to seeing you all out and about!
Q & A:
Where was I born? Arlington Heights, IL
Where did I grow up? Allentown, PA (Yes, the place Billy Joel wrote a song about J)
What was your favorite TV show then? Cheers
What was the first thing you ever wanted to be? A professional football player for the Dallas Cowboys
How might someone have described you in high school? Gregarious and friendly
What was your first job? I was “Papa Bear” at a local mall’s grand re-opening when I was 13. Complete with furry costume and all.
What was your first job in television? Sportscaster for ESTV-3 in El Segundo, CA.
What do you like about your job? Meeting new people in our community every day and giving them a voice. Each day also brings different news, so it never gets old and keeps me on my toes.
What do you not like about your job? Being outside in the bitter cold for extended periods of time
What might people be surprised to know about you? I’ve appeared on Days of our Lives, Ally McBeal and The West Wing.
What is the hardest thing you ever did? Putting my beloved Golden Retriever (Bentley) to sleep after nearly 12 years. They are such a wonderful breed.
What would be a perfect day for you? Waking up and hitting the tennis court for a few hours, then spending the day at the beach in southern CA (my former home). A fabulous dinner at a waterfront restaurant with live music would ensue, then falling asleep while listening to the waves crash on the beach.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to go into the business? Talk to as many people as possible who are in the business and begin building your network. Reach out to people in the industry whom you admire and would like to emulate. People love talking about what they do for a living. Intern when/where you can and tell people you’ll work for free to get your foot in the door. You never know who’s looking to hire now and down the road. Lastly, be the most positive person you know!
If you could only keep one 5-minute tape from your career, what would be on it? For sentimental reasons, it would have to include clips from my early days at ESTV-3 up in the broadcast booth. It would also contain segments of my favorite annual events in the city, from the Italian Festival and Car Show to the Hometown Fair and Christmas Parade down Main Street.
