Weekend Review: Lost Sunday after scintillating Saturday of football

Those good feelings for Ohio’s pro football team lasted all of one week.

The Bengals and the Browns both lost, and they did so with the help of some strange officiating decisions late.

For Cincinnati , the ruling Tyler Boyd fumbled stood despite it being pretty easy to conclude his knee was down before the ball came out.

In Cleveland , Terrelle Pryor was called for taunting after a ball he appeared to be flipping back to the official innocently hit a Ravens defender by accident.

In both cases, potential comebacks were snuffed out, and they both look like examples of the fundamental flaw of rulemaking in the NFL – they overthink everything.

At any rate, Boyd had an otherwise solid return to his hometown for the first time as a pro.

Those losses and subsequent wins by the Steelers and Ravens meant Sunday was pretty much the pits from river to lake in the Heart of It All…

But there were no doubt plenty of football fans in the Buckeye State still beaming from Saturday night's beatdown of Oklahoma.

Sure, the Sooners will probably turn out to be overrated, but Ohio State looked every bit of a national title contender in front of a hostile crowd for the first time with 16 new starters.

The Buckeyes not only rolled to victory, they did so with some flare.

If there was any doubt before the season they control their destiny in the race to the playoff, it’s gone now.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Michigan rallied to beat Colorado and Michigan State built up a big lead on Notre Dame then held on.

The Reds lost once Friday and twice Saturday before riding a strong start by Dan Straily and the still-red-hot bat of Joey Votto to victory Sunday.

Votto had four hits, including his 25th homer.

Earlier in the weekend, the Reds made some history, too, but not the good kind

The Dayton football team lost to Duquesne, but Wittenberg crushed Ohio Wesleyan.

On the high school scene , Wayne and Trotwood-Madison both endured early challenges before surging to victory in the second half.
