WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Dayton Flyers dug themselves a deep hole in Foggy Bottom and never recovered, falling behind 16-1 in the opening minutes and losing 87-81 Saturday to George Washington at the Smith Center.
The Flyers cut a 17-point halftime deficit to 74-68 with 4:15 left, but that’s where the comeback stalled. Free-throw shooting hurt. UD has shot free throws well in the second half of the season but made 17 of 31 (54.8 percent).
Kendall Pollard made 8 of 10 field goals and scored 24 points.
GW’s star: Tyler Cavanaugh made 6 of 8 3-pointers and scored 30 points in his final home game.
Key stat: The Colonials made 13 of 26 3-pointers.
Summary: Dayton’s nine-game winning streak ended. It finished the regular season 24-6 and 15-3 in the A-10.
The Dayton Flyers headed to halftime Saturday at George Washington facing their biggest halftime deficit of the season in Atlantic 10 play. They trailed 50-33 at the Smith Center in the regular-season finale. That’s not as bad as the 40-17 deficit they faced against Northwestern in December.
UD’s star: Kendall Pollard lead Dayton with 15 points. He made 5 of 6 field goals.
GW’s star: Senior Tyler Cavanaugh, playing his final home game, has 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Key stat: GW made 10 of 15 3-pointers. Dayton made 1 of 7.
Big run: The Colonials made their first nine shots from the field and led 16-1 and then 21-5.
Comeback: Dayton got as close as 10 points before the Colonials went on another run at the end of the half.
