Lou Holtz loses speaking engagement in wake of immigration comments

Speaking out has cost Lou Holtz at least once chance to speak again.

The El Paso (Texas) Times reports El Paso Cathedral High School has dropped the College Football Hall of Fame coach from the scheduled appearance at the school’s annual anniversary gala and dance.

The move comes one day after the paper published an editorial calling for the former Notre Dame head coach and Ohio State assistant to be removed.

In July, Holtz made headlines with multiple statements during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, including one about his desire to see immigrants do more to assimilate into American culture rather than vice versa.

Although it’s hard to fault a good soccer joke, the sentiments apparently weren’t shared by everyone in a state well-known for its diverse mix of cultures and love of independence.

The paper’s editorial board also took issue with Holtz’s exhumation of former Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s infamous statements about 47 percent of voters “making a living by the way they vote.”
