Dayton Flyers plan to honor McElvene throughout season

DAYTON — Almost five months have passed since Dayton Flyers center Steve McElvene died, and as the start of the 2016-17 season approaches, he is never far from the team’s thoughts.

Dayton coach Archie Miller shared some ideas Tuesday about how UD might honor McElvene this season.

“I think one thing is our guys are going to be honoring Steve clearly with some type of patch or band (on the uniforms) from this point forward as we take the floor,” Miller said. “We’re looking at some opportunities maybe to get his family down to the game and maybe even honor Steve with his championship ring, present that in front of our fans, things like that. It’s hard to address things like that. You want to keep it consistent and smooth. I think we’ve gotten over a rough part of it, and I think we’re in a good place right now. We’ll do a couple more things as the year progresses as we see fit.”

Fans will get their first glimpse of the Flyers at the Red and Blue Game on Oct. 22. Doors open at 1 p.m. The women scrimmage at 2 p.m. The men scrimmage at 3 p.m.

Dayton plays its lone exhibition game at home against Findlay at 7 p.m. Nov. 4. The Flyers open the season a week later, at 7 p.m. Nov. 11, against Austin Peay at UD Arena.
