Even the least optimistic Cleveland fan probably thought Robert Griffin III would make it more than one game before getting seriously injured.

The new Browns quarterback did not.

The team announced Monday afternoon he has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder in a season-opening loss to the Eagles.

Griffin will be re-evaluated in 3-4 weeks and could return after missing a minimum of eight games.

“It’s very unfortunate, Robert came in and has worked extremely hard to learn our offense and earn the respect of his teammates,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said in a statement.

“This is a tough loss because everyone has seen how invested he has been in this team and his dedication to the work needed to improve his craft.”

In the meantime, Josh McCown is the Browns starting quarterback.

“Robert will do everything in his power to rehab and get healthy but Josh McCown is on this roster for a reason and we have great confidence in him. He is more than capable,” Jackson said.

In his Browns regular season debut, Griffin completed only 12 of 26 passes for 190 yards with an interception and no touchdowns. He was sacked three times and ran for 37 yards on five carries.

Griffin finished with a QB rating of 55.5

He entered the season in the top 10 in career passer rating (active players) after a promising early career with the Washington Redskins but has been unable to stay healthy.
