Tennessee is coming off a loss against Missouri on Wednesday and will try to bounce back Saturday.

The Vols travel to South Carolina in an attempt to get back on the right foot. Tennessee has struggled on the road this season and the 12-6 Gamecocks will present a challenge.

The Vols needs better guard play moving forward. Jordan Bone and Jordan Bowden combined for 3 points against Missouri. The Vols won’t win many games without the guards providing more of an offensive spark the remainder of the season.

Notre Dame-Clemson basketball preview

Both Notre Dame and Clemson will look to snap losing streaks — but streaks of different kinds — when the two teams meet in an ACC clash Saturday.

The Irish, who started the season 7-1 and climbed as high as No. 5 in the AP poll at one point this season, will seek to bounce back from three consecutive losses, the most recent (and painful) of which came in double overtime at home against Louisville. All three of Notre Dame’s recent losses have come without forward Bonzie Colson, who leads the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks this season, in the lineup. Colson has missed the last five games after breaking a bone in his left foot during a practice.

Clemson, meanwhile, will look to get back to its winning ways after a loss at North Carolina on Tuesday. Perhaps more significantly, however, the Tigers will be seeking their first win in program history over the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame has won all five previous matchups between the two teams.

Notre Dame will be missing not only Colson, but one of Colson’s replacements in the lineup: freshman forward DJ Harvey. Harvey suffered a bone bruise in his left knee against Louisville and is expected to miss roughly four weeks of action.

In the absence of Harvey, forward Martinas Geben will likely be looked to to pick up the slack. Against Louisville, Geben scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Eleven of those 17 boards came on the offensive glass, which set a Notre Dame record. In addition, point guard Matt Farrell, who missed three games himself with an ankle injury, will likely be counted on heavily to run the Irish offense. Farrell leads the team with 5.3 assists per game and scored 23 points in his return to the floor against Louisville.

Clemson, meanwhile, is off to its best start since the 2009-2010 season, though the Tigers have dropped two of their past three. Clemson features an extremely balanced offense and a stingy defense. Five Tiger players average more than 10 points per game, led by junior guard Marquise Reed, who is averaging 16.2 per game. On the defensive end, Clemson ranks 15th nationally in defensive efficiency, according to Ken Pomeroy’s ratings.

Home-court advantage should provide Clemson an edge. The Tigers have lost just one out of the 15 games they have played at home this season. The 14 wins include victories over ranked opponents Miami and Florida. Playing at home and against a shorthanded Irish team, if there was ever a prime opportunity for Clemson to pick up its first win against Notre Dame, this appears to be it.

Iowa-Purdue-mens basketball

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa Hawkeyes (10-10, 1-6 Big Ten) play host to the No. 3-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (18-2, 7-0 Big Ten) in a Big Ten game pitting teams from opposite ends of the standings.

Purdue holds an 88-76 lead in the series, which dates to 1908. Iowa has won five of the past seven games, including the past four in Iowa City. The teams split last season’s games.

Iowa will celebrate former player Chris Street, who died 25 years ago in a car accident. Many of Street’s former teammates and coaches will be in attendance, and there will be a halftime presentation.

Iowa-Purdue preview

On paper, this is the biggest mismatch in the Big Ten this season. In league play, Purdue averages 77 points a game to rank second. Iowa scores 75.3 points a game, ranking fifth. But when it comes to defense, Purdue is the league’s best in holding opponents to 60.4 points per game. Iowa is by far the league’s worst at 84.1 points per game.

The point differential translates to different courses for these long-time Big Ten foes. Purdue (18-2, 7-0 Big Ten) is ranked third nationally. Iowa (10-10, 1-6) is one spot above last in the league. Despite the Hawkeyes winning the past four home games against the Boilermakers, the numbers alone show the recipe for a potential blowout.

“We have to execute, and we have to put two halves together, which, quite honestly, we haven’t really done against good teams,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “We’ve played terrific sometimes one half versus another. And even in some of our better victories, we get down 20 to Illinois, but we won. Colorado, we blew two leads and won. You’ve got to play both halves against that team.”

Iowa might have an emotional edge with a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a “White Out.” The program will celebrate former player Chris Street throughout the game and honor his legacy in a halftime ceremony. Street was killed in a car accident on Jan. 19, 1993 but remains one of the most popular athletes in school history.

“The fact that we’re going to honor his memory the way we are [Saturday] is special,” McCaffery said. “It speaks to who we are as a program, as an institution. And I always use the words we’re a family, and that’s what you do. You remember, and you honor. It will be good for everybody involved.”

“We all know that it’s a special day, a special game,” Iowa forward Tyler Cook said. “I think hearing the kind of guy that he was and the kind of player that he was and what he brought to this team kind of does inspire us. So I’m looking forward to it.”
