— The adorable little café nestled on Brown Street is quite humble about a heavenly breakfast item we found on their menu.
Chai Tea French Toast at Butter Café. Yes, if you thought the aromatic smell of Chai could only be found in your favorite latte, then boy, do we have news for you.
First of all, what is chai? The word seems to be thrown around by every coffee shop connoisseur these days— so let’s finally agree on what we’re talking about here. Chai is just an Indian word for tea. So when you hear chai tea, you’re really hearing tea tea.
Masala chai is the drink we know and love here in the States. It’s a spiced tea usually including cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper.
Pour that into a frothy cup of warm, sweetened milk and all of a sudden you feel the desire to curl up with a good book on a rainy afternoon. It’s magic.
Well, Butter Café has done us a favor by dipping their already mouthwatering French toast into a rich chai tea latte batter and creating something wonderful.
This past weekend, I tried them for myself.
My fork sank into the warm stack as a butter and creamy mascarpone cheese filling oozed from between the slices. The second bite was better than the first, and so on.
As powerful as my sweet tooth can be, I’m easily turned off by an overly sweet breakfast. But the mascarpone cheese added just enough to create a good sweet and savory balance. Order a bold cup of Butter Café’s organic coffee with it and you’ll be set.
