Earlier this week, Wayne Winters began walking busy streets in Farr West, Utah, wearing a sign that reads “Need Kidney 4 Wife,” along with his telephone number. Winters’ wife, Deanne Winters, has stage 5 kidney failure.

“I don’t walk real fast,” Wayne Winters told KSTU. “I’m trying to get a kidney for my wife.

“She’s on dialysis and she doesn’t like it. It’s horrible.”

Wayne Winters said he got the idea of using a sandwich board after seeing a story online about another man who received national attention by using one.

“I thought, ‘I can do this,’” he told KSTU.

Winters said the first day he walked, a man stopped and said he would check to see if he was a match. But until there is a confirmed match, he will continue to pound the streets.

“After I get a kidney I will have my wife back the way she was, normal, helping people, loving people,” Winters told KSTU. “She likes to serve other people.”

Damon Allen, 41, was a 15-year veteran of the Texas Highway Patrol. He was shot and killed at about 4 p.m. on Interstate 45 just south of Fairfield, WFAA reported.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Allen had pulled over the suspect's vehicle for a traffic violation at about 3:45 p.m. After making contact with the driver, the trooper had returned to his patrol car when the suspect fired multiple shots from a rifle, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Allen died at the scene, WFAA reported.

Allen was a husband and father of three, the Texas Highway Patrol said.

Authorities later arrested the driver of the vehicle, Dabrett Montreal Black, 32, of Lindale, the Star-Telegram reported.

The Waller County Sheriff's Officer posted on Facebook that one of its deputies had spotted Black driving in that county west of Houston and that shots had been fired afterward.

Just before 9 p.m., Black was found hiding in a field and taken into custody. He did have nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, KBTX reported. He was being treated for a K-9 bite, authorities said late Thursday.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement that “this trooper died selflessly serving Texas. Please join Angela and me as we pray for the trooper's family and for the entire Department of Public Safety.”

Gov. Greg Abbott reacted from his Twitter account. “Sad on Thanksgiving to lose one of our state troopers in the line of duty,”he wrote. “Prayers for his family. Swift justice for his killer.”

The man was driving on Highway 7 near La Grande in Pierce County, naked and having sex with a woman who also was naked, when he missed a curve, went off the road and struck a tree, State Patrol spokeswoman Brooke Bova said.

The crash occurred Wednesday at 6 p.m. troopers said.

Witnesses told troopers both the man and woman were naked when they got out of the car, The Everett Herald reported. Troopers said they were also both impaired.

The woman wasn't wearing a seat belt. She was taken to the hospital with several broken bones. The 3-month-old child in the back seat was not injured.

The man was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, vehicular assault and child endangerment, the Herald reported.

Troopers said the man has three prior DUI convictions.

The ingredients to make the apple pie oats kits -- Scottish oats, puffed rice, dehydrated apple bits and nutmeg -- were contributed by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and organizers from Orlando, Florida-based Feeding Children Everywhere.

There were 60 assembly tables set up at the Missionary Training Center to accommodate 1,500 volunteers, the News reported. Working in teams of 12, the missionaries sang holiday hymns and rang a cowbell each time a kit was sealed and ready for delivery.

Dave Green, CEO of Feeding Children Everywhere, told missionaries during a meeting before the service project, “Our mission as an organization is activating people for a hunger-free world.”

The completed meals were stacked up on pallets and will be picked up Monday by the Utah Food Bank, then distributed throughout the state by next week, the News reported.

Ginette Bott, chief development officer of the Utah Food Bank, said the work by the volunteers was gratifying.

“I think we all are able to be more grateful when we give to someone else,” Bott told the News. “I hope this will be a lasting memory for these [missionaries].”

Deputy Eric Overall, 50, died when he was “deliberately ran down” after putting down “stop sticks” to slow down the suspect’s vehicle, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department said.

Overall was outside of his patrol car at approximately 12:31 a.m. the suspect saw him him, deputies said. The suspect's vehicle then rolled over, the Free Press reported.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, and said Overall died of blunt force trauma, CNN reported.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Overall “had a great career here and touched a lot of lives.”

“Deputy Overall was not in the roadway at the time, and in fact was well off the roadway, and he had just deployed the ‘stop sticks.’ It is our belief ... from all evidence collected that the suspect deliberately ran down Deputy Overall, swerving to hit him,” according to a statement from the Oakland County sheriff's office.

The suspect is from Macomb Township and is now in the Macomb County Jail. CNN reported. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office's Special Investigations Unit will present a warrant request to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office on Saturday, the statement said.

Overall was recently married and has an adult son. A GoFundMe account was set up to help Overall’s family, and the goal of $30,000 was met by late Thursday.
