Transformer fire evacuates, closes Vandalia rec center

VANDALIA — UPDATE @ 6:45 p.m.

The Vandalia Recreation Center will be closed the rest of tonight and possibly through the weekend after the center was evacuated for a transformer fire.

There were 20 people in the facility when it was cleared around 5:30 p.m. as a precaution, said Fire Chief Chad Pollick. The transformer had scorching on the bottom, but the building was not damaged and DP&L was on scene.

Earlier today, the power went out and the generator kicked on. But then when the power came back on the generator did not go off on its own, the fire chief said. It’s not known if those electrical issues are connected to the problem tonight at the facility.

The city will post on the Vandalia Recreation Center’s Facebook page whether it will be closed over the weekend. Regular hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
