Troopers: Shelby County I-75 crash ‘poetic justice’

UPDATE @ 10:10 a.m. (May 1)

State troopers are calling it ‘poetic justice’ after three men wanted for stealing a trailer and four-wheeler from Logan County were caught after those stolen items caused a crash on Interstate 75.

The crash occurred on April 30, when an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed on southbound Interstate 75, rolled multiple times near the Miami County, Shelby County Line. State troopers said the crash was caused by a trailer the SUV was towing started to fishtail and eventually caused the SUV to flip, ejecting one of the passengers.

Investigators said, the trailer and four-wheeler were reported stolen from two separate homes in Logan County earlier in the morning.

The driver, who has been identified as 38-year-old Jason Davidson, suffered a broken leg in the crash and was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney, before being transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton by CareFlight. State troopers said Davidson had several active warrants for his arrest from Kettering, Madison and Logan counties. Davidson is also a suspect wanted for questioning in a shooting in Logan County that occurred on April 29, according to troopers.

One of the passengers, identified as 34-year-old John Riley, of Dayton, was ejected during the crash, according to troopers. Riley was first taken to Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy, before he was also transported to Miami Valley Hospital. Riley remains in the hospital for treatment, but his condition was not available.

The third person in the vehicle was identified as 28-year-old Joshua Bach, of Dayton. He was also transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment, but was treated, released, and arrested.

Stemming from the incidents that occurred just on April 30, all three men will face receiving stolen property charges out of Logan County. Bach is currently booked in the Logan County Jail, while Davidson and Riley remain hospitalized.

Investigators of the crash said Davidson was picked to drive the SUV to the take the four-wheeler because he knew the location of the house where they planned to take it. The four-wheeler belonged to another suspect in the Logan County shooting from April 29 who was incarcerated in the Logan County Jail.

FIRST REPORT (April 30)

Three men from Dayton were injured in a rollover crash that shut down all lanes of southbound I-75 in southern Shelby County Saturday morning.

State troopers and medics were dispatched to southbound I-75 at the Miami County, Shelby County Line around 8:20 a.m. on a reported rollover crash with one person ejected.

Sgt. David Robison of the Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said witnesses reported the SUV was towing an all-terrain vehicle on a trailer and was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash. Robison said an initial investigation found the trailer began to fishtail, went into the median, hit a guardrail, and overturned.

Initial reports indicated one person was ejected from the SUV, but Robison said that detail was still under investigation.

The three occupants, all identified as men from Dayton, all suffered injuries and were transported first to Wilson Memorial Hospital, according to Robison. One man was transferred by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. The conditions of the victims were not available.

All southbound lanes of the highway were blocked for about an hour before one lane reopened around 9:20 a.m. All lanes reopened around 10:15 a.m. according to state troopers.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, but other potential causes are still under investigation.
