Police: Diapered child in traffic nearly causes Kettering crash

Kettering police Wednesday evening investigated after a 7-year-old girl was found to be alone and running in traffic.

Multiple calls to 9-1-1 were reported after the child nearly caused a vehicle crash on South Dixie Drive.

Officer John Jung said the investigation revealed the child, who is diagnosed with autism, accidentally got out of her house in the 2200 block of South Dixie Drive.

“The house did have numerous security measures in place to keep the child safe, but the child was still able to get out,” Jung said in an email. “Officers arrived on scene and the mother of the child arrived at about the same time. Officers did not see anything criminal and chose to return the child to the care of mother and a grandmother whom also arrived.”

The child was wearing only a diaper around 6:15 p.m. when several people attempted to chase her to get her out of the street, eyewitnesses said.
