‘Shovel girl’ graduates from drug court

A girl at the center of a 2014 viral video that showed her getting struck in the head with a shovel graduated from drug court today.

The 15 graduates of the program have completed comprehensive drug treatment, intensive supervision and full accountability, according to a release.

Miranda Fugate, who graduated and spoke at Thursday’s ceremony, pleaded guilty to a charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct last year after a video showed her fighting with Emily Olinger of Tipp City. Both girls were 14 when the video went viral.

Fugate said graduating from the program is probably her “biggest accomplishment.”

“I was going down a really bad path and I was really close to, either overdose, getting in a car wreck, getting shot, anything,” she said. “Without Judge Capizzi and going to jail as many times as I did, even though it was a lot, I don’t think I would be here today.”

Fugate said she went to treatment for nine months after the video. She said the video was a wake-up call.
