Klonda Richey, killed by dogs, remembered at vigil

UPDATE @ 8:42 p.m.: Neighbors and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember Klonda Richey, who was fatally mauled near her home on Bruce Avenue a year ago by two mixed-mastiff dogs — the very animals she had filed complaints against.

Richey had sought a protection order against the owner of the dogs. There were calls to change laws and seriously examine of whether citizens are adequately protected against vicious and dangerous dogs. Numerous public officials said Richey’s death would not be ignored.

One year later, relatively little has transpired. A bill introduced to toughen the state’s dog laws went nowhere and the chief sponsor lost his seat in the November elections.

The owners of the dogs were charged with misdemeanors but remain free.

Read more about Richey, and the year that has passed since her death, in Sunday’s Dayton Daily News.

FIRST REPORT

Saturday marks the one-year-anniversary since a Dayton woman was mauled by two dogs.

Neighbors planned a vigil in her memory, held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the corner of Main Street and Bruce Avenue. Richey was mauled to death on Feb. 7, 2014, by her neighbors’ dogs.

The owners of the dogs, Andrew Nason and Julie Custer, are facing misdemeanors for failing to control their dogs. They are free on bond and scheduled for a jury trial in April.
