Snow coming this weekend

Clouds are scattered with low temperatures in the mid-teens ahead of an approaching snow storm, when light snow will arrive Saturday and continue off and on into Sunday morning, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek said.

Saturday: Morning sun will be followed by increasing clouds with highs near freezing.

Saturday night, areas of light snow will begin to push into the area. This will be generally after midnight, Wirdzek said, and a very small accumulation is expected initially.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch beginning at midnight Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday for the entire region.

Sunday: "Snow will be light in the morning, then become steadier into the afternoon," Wirdzek said.

“Snow will become steadier in the afternoon as the storm approaches the area from the southwest. Sleet and rain will mix in with the snow south of Interstate 70, potentially changing to all rain for the late afternoon Dayton and south, while areas north of I-70 stay all snow, or with some sleet mixing in at times.”

Any rain for parts south would quickly transition back to snow before tapering down late Sunday night.

Accumulations will be between 5 and 10 inches across the region, with a band of the higher accumulation hitting within the region. The locations for that band won’t be known until the storm track becomes clearer, Wirdzek said.

Sunday night, Wirdzek said additional light snow showers will linger in the wake of the storm system. Lows will be in the upper single digits.

“It will be windy with blowing and drifting snow, and the big drop in temps will allow for roads to be very treacherous by the morning commute,” Wirdzek said.

Monday: A snow shower is possible early, but no additional accumulation is expected. Blowing and drifting snow may still be an issue throughout the day. Highs will reach the mid-teens.
