Pedestrian hit, killed in Englewood identified

UPDATE @11 a.m.: The Englewood Police Department has identified the victim of a fatal pedestrian crash in Englewood Thursday night as Katherine Nichols, 74, of Englewood.

Nichols, who was not in a crosswalk, was walking northbound across West National Road and was struck by a vehicle which was traveling eastbound on West National Road.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.

UPDATE @ 11:30 p.m.: The driver in the fatal accident on National Road (U.S. 40) was a woman in her 20s, Englewood police said, and they aren't saying whether they will pursue charges.

UPDATE @ 10:35 p.m.: The Montgomery County Coroner's Office has been sent to National Road (U.S. 40), where a woman was struck and killed.

Englewood police say that according to their preliminary investigation, the victim was struck by an SUV that was headed east.

UPDATE @ 10:12 p.m.: The pedestrian hit on National Road (U.S. 40) has been killed.

The victim has been covered with a sheet. There is a walker and several items -- a shoe, a soda can, a baseball cap -- in the street.

There is a minivan that is parked inside the area that has been cordoned off by crime scene tape.

FIRST REPORT: Police and a medic unit are on the scene of a pedestrian accident in the area of Chris Drive and U.S. 40 (National Road).

U.S. 40 is shut down at Union Boulevard.
