Freezing fog, subzero temps likely

Clearing skies will cause temperatures to dip into the single digits by midnight, and below zero by Friday morning, StormCenter 7 Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs said.

The conditions are perfect for freezing fog to develop overnight, which could cause slick spots for the morning commute.

From the recent rain and snowfall, and the cold weather, Vrydaghs said there could be a few reports of frost quakes. One woman reported hearing a loud boom in Clayton, which could have been a frost quake, which occurs when water seeps into the ground, then freezes and expands. This can sometimes cause mini “explosions,” or loud booms as the ground cracks.

During the day Friday, despite the extreme cold the sun will be shining. Temperatures could climb in to the mid-20s by the afternoon — but that still is 20 degrees below normal for this time of year, said Vrydaghs.

Scattered clouds will arrive Friday night, and temperatures stay around 20 degrees.

Saturday will be partly sunny and breezy. A passing rain or snow shower is possible. Strong winds from the south will drive the area’s temperatures in to the upper 30s to near 40 degrees.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of an early flurry. Temperatures will be in the low 40s in the afternoon.

We’ll start the workweek with a mix of sun and clouds Monday, with highs in the low 40s. Temperatures climb to the upper 40s on Tuesday.
