Semi driver critically hurt in I-75 North crash

UPDATE @ 8:20 p.m.: The accident involving the semitrailer and a sedan, which shut down I-75 North about 4 1/2 hours, remains under investigation, Moraine Lt. Jon Spencer said.

The driver of the semitrailer, a 45-year-old man from McKeesport, Pa., remains in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital.

The driver of the Subaru sedan, a 34-year-old woman from Loveland, Ohio, was treated and released.

All lanes of I-75 North were reopened about 7:20 p.m. after fire crews from Dayton and West Carrollton cleared the roadway of debris and spilled diesel fuel.

UPDATE @ 4:45 p.m.: The driver of a semitrailer involved in the accident with a car on I-75 North has suffered critical injuries involving burns, Moraine fire Lt. Phil Sinewe said. The truck driver has been taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

Sinewe said the man was out of the cab, which was on fire, when crews arrived on scene. Sinewe said his crews were told the driver was in the truck as it was burning. He had no information about the extent of the man’s injuries.

The lieutenant said the driver of the car suffered minor injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, the accident occurred just north of Springboro Pike. There was a second accident that occurred on I-75 North involving an SUV, debris from the semitrailer-car wreck and a light pole that was knocked down and landed on the southbound side of the interstate.

No one was injured in that second accident, Sinewe said.

The lieutenant said Dayton and West Carrollton fire crews are on scene to mop up diesel that spilled because of the wreck, which will be investigated by Moraine police.

I-75 North will be closed until at least 6 p.m., probably 7 p.m., Sinewe said.

UPDATE @ 4:20 p.m.: The right lane of I-75 South has reopened following the fiery three-vehicle injury crash on I-75 North involving a semi that shut down the interstate in both directions. The northbound lanes remain closed.

UPDATE @ 4:11 p.m.: A fiery, three-vehicle crash has shut down I-75 in both directions in Moraine near the Edwin C. Moses Boulevard exit.

Following are detours around the crash provided by the Ohio Highway Patrol:

  • Motorists traveling north on I-75 should take I-675 to U.S. 35 to get back onto I-75 North.
  • Motorists heading south on I-75 should take U.S. 35 to I-675 before resuming travel on I-75 South.

UPDATE @ 3:42 p.m. Flames can be seen shooting about five feet in the air and a column of black smoke rising this afternoon from an engulfed semitrailer .

Crews from multiple jurisdictions were called just after 3 p.m. to a report of a fiery injury crash involving two vehicles, including a semi, near the Edwin C. Moses Boulevard exit in the northbound lanes.

Interstate 75 is shut down in both directions in Moraine. Northbound I-75 is closed from Dryden Road to Edwin C. Moses Boulevard. Southbound I-75 is blocked from Carillon Boulevard to state Route 741.

Exits off the highway are backed up with traffic, which is being diverted off the interstate.

FIRST REPORT

Interstate 75 is closed in both directions in Moraine due to because of a fiery crash. The crash was reported just after 3 p.m.

Initial reports indicate a vehicle and a semitrailer -tractor trailer are on fire. Injuries have been reported.

We have crews on the way. This report will be updated as additional information becomes available.
