School leader gets harassment letter

By Steve Baker

The Auglaize County Sheriff's Department is looking for the author of a "harassing  letter" left in the mailbox at the home of  Wapakoneta School Supt. Keith Horner.

The letter was left sometime after 8 p.m. December 31, 2011 and 9 a.m. Sunday January 1, 2012.

"It was a harassment type letter," said Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon. "The letter made no immediate threat of  harm. The discussion in the letter was in regard to the teachers negotiations," said Solomon.

At a special meeting of the board of education on Saturday, December 30, 2011, the board implemented what they referred to as their "last, best and final offer."  On a vote of 4-0 the school board approved a new three-year contract without a vote of the teachers.

Earlier this week, red spray paint was used to leave messages for the school administration on the district's administration office on Gardenia Drive in Wapakoneta. The messages read, "We want the truth." "We tax payers want the truth" and "Shame on you."  They were painted on two windows and an electrical transformer box.

Police in Wapakoneta are investigating that act of vandalism.

Anyone with information about the letter is asked to contact the Auglaize County Sheriff's Department at 419-739-6565.

The teachers have given their negotiators authorization to issue a 10-day strike notice to the board of education. So far that notice had not yet been issued as tensions rise.
