Watches, advisories end as thunderstorms head out

By Breaking News Staff

The watches and flood advisories prompted by thunderstorms that visited the region Monday night have ended, and the promised cold front is delivering cooler air.

The thunderstorms did not move through quietly, issuing lightning and high winds. Weather spotters reported a 54 mph wind gust in Potsdam, Darke County, as well as a 50 mph blast in Arcanum and a 45 mph gust at Dayton International Airport, Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson said Monday night.

Temps have fallen from the low 80s to the mid-60s where it has rained, he said.

As many as 16 counties in the region were under a severe thunderstorm watch that expired just after 9 p.m. The watch extended as far south as Butler, as far north as Shelby, as far east as Madison and as far southeast as Greene, according to the National Weather Service.

The flood advisory for Darke, western Miami, southern Shelby, Champaign and Logan has expired as well.

The line of storms carrying heavy rain and lightning worked its way through Randolph and Wayne counties in Indiana earlier Monday evening. That same line came through the Dayton area.

Of the smattering of traffic accidents reporting between 7:30 and 9 p.m., one was blamed on weather. That one involved a Dodge Ram pickup that hit the median wall along I-75 south at Stanley Avenue. Dayton police said the driver told them she lost control on the slick roadway. She suffered minor injuries.

The cold front behind those storms will bring a few showers through about midnight, Simpson said. Clouds are expected to break overnight.

Tuesday will be unseasonably cool and a few light showers are possible. Highs will be in the mid-70s.

Wednesday will be even cooler, with a few morning light showers. Highs will be in the low 70s.
