Family escapes burning Springfield home

Six people escaped a fire that severely damaged a home in Springfield.

Firefighters were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. Sunday to the 500 block of Chestnut Avenue in Springfield after a family member spotted the fire from the back of the house.

All six family members safely evacuate the home and no injuries were reported, according to Springfield Fire Chief Kevin Sprinkle.

Neighbors said they heard multiple booms before seeing flames and smoke coming from the house, but fire investigators have not identified a cause of the blaze.

Sprinkle says the house sustained significant damage and is unstable. Fire crews and investigators will remain at the scene into the morning.

The residents will be displaced and are staying with family in the area.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
