2 escape house fire in Springfield

Two brothers escaped a burning duplex in Springfield early this morning.

One of the men woke up to the smell of smoke, and alerted his brother before evacuating the home safely. The other was forced to jump from a second story window. Neither man was injured.

Firefighters responded around 3:45 a.m. and were able to quickly knock down flames at the property, near the intersection of High and Race streets.

They say the fire started at the front of the home, but the cause is undetermined.

Crews were in contact with a train that was attempting to pass the scene while firefighters were still battling the flames. That train was put on hold until after crews cleared the scene.
