3 students hurt after truck rolls into creek

UPDATE @ 3:54 p.m.:

Three Arcanum-Butler students on the way to school this morning were hospitalized after ther pickup spun out of control, rolled over and landed in a creek bed.

The crash happened just after 9:15 p.m. in the 2800 block of Littles Road, according to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

Lucas A. Gower, 18, of Arcanum, was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger extended cab truck north on Littles Road when he lost control of the vehicle on ice north of Hollansburg-Arcanum Road, according to preliminary investigation by the sheriff’s offfice.

The Ford Ranger went off the right side of the road, spun out of control as it struck a mailbox and traveled over an embankment into a creek bed, coming to rest on its side in the water, deputies said.

Gower and his 10-year-old passenger, a girl, were taken to Wayne HealthCare, and his 11-year-old passenger, a boy, was flown by CareFlight to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

The names and conditions of the juveniles were not available, and the crash remains under investigation.

In addition to Darke County deputies, Arcanum Fire and Rescue, New Madison Fire, Tri-Village Rescue and Greenville Twp. Rescue were called to the scene.

FIRST REPORT

Three students were in a truck that crashed into a creek on their way to school this morning in Arcanum – trapping one of them inside in the water.

One of the juveniles was flown to Dayton 000000001Children’s Hospital by CareFlight. The other two were taken to Wayne Hospital, emergency crews at the scene said.

They said none of the injuries to the students are life-threatening. An 18-year-old reportedly was driving, but the ages of the other two students were not immediately released.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Littles Road as they headed to school on a two-hour delay. Roads in the area were icy at the time.

Arcanum-Butler Local Schools posted on its website that administrators were responding to the hospitals to be with the students and their families.
