A 26-year-old Piqua man was killed in a fiery crash on Ziegler Road early Sunday morning, and his father suffered a fatal heart attack when he was notified of his son’s death.
John Owen was pronounced dead at the crash scene on Ziegler Road where crews were dispatched around 2:30 a.m.
WHIO’s Steve Baker reports when deputies made notification to John’s father, 52-year-old David Owen, he suffered a fatal heart attack.
According to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, John Owen was driving a sport utility vehicle on Ziegler when the vehicle went out of control, struck a pole and burst into flames.
Neighbor Scott Rohrer Sr. said the crash “sounded like an explosion.”
“There was nothing I could do to save the driver, I feel so bad,” Rohrer said.
What caused the crash is still under investigation.
