Warning: What you need to know about safe grilling

A local fire department is warning Memorial Day revelers to be cautious when they light up the grill this holiday weekend.

One of the first things to consider, is where your grill is placed — is it too close to a combustible material?

What you need to know:

• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors

• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches

• Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area

• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill

• Never leave your grill unattended

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it

Charcoal grills

• Purchase the proper starter fluid and store out of reach of children, and away from heat sources

• Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals or kindling have already been ignited, and never use any flammable or combustible liquid other than charcoal starter fluid to get the fire going

• When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container

Propane grills

• Always check the propane cylinder hose for leaks once a year before use. A light soap and water solution applied to the hose will reveal escaping propane by releasing bubbles

• If you smell gas while cooking, turn the gas off, get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the grill
