Drivers stuck in high water cited under new law

Greene County deputies have written five tickets to drivers who drove around road closed signs and got stuck in high water.

Under the new law, drivers face a misdemeanor charge for driving on any closed road. Drivers also have to reimburse department up to $2,000 for their emergency response.

Greene County has issued five of the citations since the law went into effect in March, with three of those being issued in the last week when drivers got stuck in high water on Factory Road. Other area counties said no citations have been issued yet.

“The female we had on Factory Road was very apologetic,” said Greene County Sgt. Beth Prall. “And then you get other people who are very mad.”

Prall said the height and weight of a car is not nearly as significant as how quickly that water is moving.
