Man dead after shooting that led to standoff

UPDATE@6:13 p.m.:

A father of six girls has died from injuries sustained in a Salem Avenue shooting Monday morning.

Dustin Brooks, 27, of Dayton, was declared clinically dead Tuesday, and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office said they expect to complete an autopsy Thursday. Family members agreed to donate Brooks’ organs after learning he signed paperwork to be an organ donor.

“His mother is taking it awful hard. It’s hard,” said John Wilder, Brooks’ grandfather. “His life is just beginning. (His daughters) will be growing up without a father. He was a family man, you know. He loved his girls.”

Brooks was shot in the neck while driving away from a home in the 3800 block of Salem Avenue in Harrison Twp. Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies heard shots fired in the area and found Brooks’ vehicle riddled with bullets. They traced the dozens of shell casings back to a residence where investigators said the owner was running a bootleg liquor operation.

Six people inside the home surrendered to the county SWAT team following an almost seven-hour standoff. However, none of those people have been charged in connection with Brooks’ death. Sheriff’s office officials said they are working suspect information, but have not issued an arrest warrant yet.

Wilder said he hopes whoever is responsible for Brooks’ death would “man up and turn himself in.”

“He was man enough to do it,” Wilder added.

Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office at (937) 225-4557.

The victim was identified as Dustin Brooks, 27, of Dayton. An autopsy is expected to be performed today.

UPDATE @ 6:10 p.m. April 13:

A shooting in Harrison Twp. led the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to shutdown an alleged bootleg liquor operation.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Salem and Siebenthaler avenues just after 3 a.m. Monday in response to reports of a man shot inside his vehicle. When deputies arrived, they found the car had been riddled with bullets. Two men inside, one of whom was shot in the neck, Wilson said.

Deputies traced shell casings back to a home in the 3800 block of Salem Avenue. It’s believed the shooting victim was leaving that residence when the gunfire began. The home is well known to investigators due to numerous complaints about a bootleg liquor operation. The home features an “Open” sign and a food truck is commonly parked outside to cater to those frequenting the establishment, Wilson said.

The man who was shot in the neck has not been identified, but he’s listed in critical condition at an area hospital, sheriff’s office officials said.

When deputies tried to talk to people at the Salem Avenue home, owner Eric Parker declined to comment, and refused to leave the residence, Wilson said.

The Montgomery County SWAT team was called to the scene and, armed with a search warrant, they entered the home and ordered six people inside to surrender. Four men and two women were taken into custody after a 45 minute standoff, Wilson said. He noted that no one has been charged with a crime, and everyone was being questioned Monday.

Parker claimed people were at the home for a “birthday party,” and he did not know the person who was shot.

“They weren’t even at the party. They were stopped on Salem. I don’t know who it was,” Parker said. “All I heard were shots and I started jumping like everybody else.”

Deputies were seen removing several bags of evidence from inside the home connected to the alleged bootleg operation, and Wilson said shell casings were found in the parking lot along with numerous firearms in vehicles parked outside. He said the incident was much more than “a party.”

“I don’t know about a birthday party, but if it’s a birthday party, they have a birthday party almost seven nights a week here,” Wilson said. “One of our goals is to get this place shutdown and unfortunately now we have a subject who is shot.”

Anyone with information should call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office at 225-4557.
