UPDATE @6:56 p.m. (Jan. 14): A woman's unborn baby was reportedly killed in an assault that left the mother in critical condition.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy on the fetus, which was about seven months along at the time of the assault, officials said. Investigators were still trying to notify next of kin Wednesday evening.

The 25-year-old mother, who is not being named because she’s a domestic violence victim, was in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital Wednesday night.

Neighbors found the woman at the intersection of Edison Street and Decker Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, police said. In a 911 call, she can be heard asking for help, telling bystanders she was assaulted by her boyfriend and that she was “dying.”

She also repeatedly told the 911 callers she had been kicked in the stomach.

Dayton homicide detectives, along with the special victims unit, are investigating. The fetus’ death is being investigated as a homicide, said Lt. Wendy Stiver.

“It would take a significant amount of force to do that (to the unborn baby),” she said. “All homicides are disturbing. This is particularly disturbing. Obviously, there is a child involved.”

The victim’s boyfriend and police’s suspect in the assault, 24-year-old Tanner “Devon” Hopkins, was located Wednesday afternoon with the assistance of the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, Stiver said. He’s in the Montgomery County Jail on a felonious assault charge.

Stiver said the case will be presented to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office to consider additional charges against Hopkins. His criminal history includes convictions for felonious assault, aggravated assault and having weapons under disability, according to court records.
