UPDATE @10:54 a.m. (March 12):

No arrests have been made in the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old man Wednesday at the Summit Square Townhouse Apartments in Dayton.

A woman who called 911 and said she had stabbed the man was questioned and released, a Dayton Police Department spokeswoman said Thursday.

Police are not releasing the woman’s name because she’s not been charged.

“The case will eventually be presented to the prosecutor to see if they want to pursue charges,” the police spokeswoman said.

Keith Jones, 23, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital Wednesday morning after the reported stabbing. He later died from his injuries.

The woman who called 911 told dispatchers that Jones was her boyfriend and that she had stabbed him, police said. The woman’s mother said Jones had attacked her daughter.

Police had not previously responded to any domestic-violence related calls involving Jones at the residence.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s office officially ruled Jones’ death a homicide.

FIRST REPORT

A man died after being stabbed this morning, and a woman who called 911 told the dispatcher she stabbed him, according to police.

The incident happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. at the Summit Square Townhouse Apartments. Emergency crews found Keith Jones, 23, seriously injured at the scene. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, said Dayton police Lt. Wendy Stiver.

The woman, whose name has not been released, is approximately 20. She said Jones was her boyfriend, Stiver said.

Neighbors and family members stood outside of the apartment and grieved while police investigated.

Police are looking for witnesses to find out what led to the stabbing. Officers declined to give additional information.

Stacy Stubblefield, the woman’s mother, said she was at work when the stabbing occurred. She said she was devastated when she learned what happened.

“I can’t believe my daughter is going through something like this,” she said.

Stubblefield said Jones attacked her daughter while she was sleeping, and the couple had a history of domestic violence.

“He woke her up and started punching her in the face,” Stubblefield said.

The woman’s father was upstairs sleeping during incident, but Jones restrained her so she could not call for help, according to Stubblefield.

“He dragged her into the kitchen by her hair,” she said. “She tried to call for her father, but (Jones) kept choking her.”

Stubblefield said that is when her daughter reached for a knife and stabbed Jones.

Officers took the woman to the police station to be questioned Wednesday. She has been released, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Stubblefield said the two were not living together, but Jones visited her daughter at the apartment often, and they had another incident at the apartment in recent weeks.

“He was punching on her and dragging her across the snow,” said Stubblefield.
