Pickup truck smashes into vacant house in Urbana

The driver of a pickup truck was taken to a hospital after the vehicle crashed into a vacant house off Children’s Home Road.

The driver apparently failed to negotiate a stop at eastbound Children’s Home and North Dugan roads and most of the vehicle ended up inside the structure, Urbana Fire Acting Capt. Brett Evilsizor said.

Champaign County deputies and a fire/rescue crew were dispatched just after 7 p.m. on a call of a possible entrapment.

The house has been unoccupied for some time and has been hit by vehicles in the past, the fire captain said.

There was no information about the driver, who was taken to Mercy Urbana Hospitals. The driver’s condition was not immediately known.

Deputies shut down the intersection for a time because of the accident, which remains under investigation.
