Child found crying in the cold, mother cited

A 26 year old mother was cited for child endangering after Sheriff’s Deputies found her 4 year-old-son crying on the porch in the 2600 block of Grant Ave. on Wednesday evening.

Amber McDavid showed up while deputies were talking with the child, who was cold and crying, around 7 p.m. He reportedly told them he didn’t know where his mother was and was looking for her. The deputies put the child in their cruiser to warm him up.

Meanwhile, McDavid showed up and told police she’d only been gone about 10 minutes. She’d been cleaning at the address and went next door to talk with a resident. There they “smoked a blunt.” She told the deputy she didn’t take her son because she didn’t want him exposed to marijuana smoke.

The deputy called McDavid’s mother to collect the pair and take them home. McDavid was issued a summons for marijuana possession and child endangering. Court date is Feb. 5 in Vandalia Municipal Court.
