An 86-year-old Miami Twp. man, who police said told them he hit his wife with a hammer to put her out of her misery, is in jail on a charge of attempted murder.

Miami Twp. police were called to the home of Andrew Monachella, on Gardenia Drive, late Sunday night.

A medical crew took his 81-year-old wife to Kettering Medical Center. She was listed as a patient there Monday.

Officers said when they questioned Monachella, he admitted to trying to kill his wife. Police said she suffers from a medical condition, but they could not give further details about her condition.

Monday afternoon, the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office has approved two counts of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault against Monachella, who is to make an initial appearance in court on Wednesday.
