Driver suffers burns after explosion, car fire

UPDATE @ 10:25 p.m.:

A driver was injured tonight after his car ignited during an explosion.

Police and firefighters were called around 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of Farmersville-West Carrollton Road and Soldiers Home-Miamisburg Road.

When crews arrived, the Honda Accord was engulfed, and the driver said the car caught fire after he heard a blast, said West Carrollton Fire Capt. Andy Shepherd.

“During the process of investigating what may have caused that explosion, (the driver) did sustain some pretty significant injuries — burns — and was transported to Miami Valley (Hospital) for treatment,” Shepherd said.

Crews were initially called to a report of a single-vehicle crash. The car was off the right side of the road, but it doesn’t appear there had been an accident. It’s not clear what caused the car to ignite, Shepherd said.

“He (the driver) as a trade was a painter and there were several cans of paint, paint thinners and so forth in the vehicle that really led to the spread of the fire,” Shepherd said. “As you can see there’s not much left of the vehicle — quite a bit of damage.”
