Dozens in Preble County report identity thefts

The Preble County Sheriff’s Office is investigating dozens of cases of identity theft and credit card fraud. The information that’s been stolen is being used across the country, according to Sheriff Mike Simpson.

The complaints came in to the department beginning yesterday afternoon, more than 40 reports received including the Sheriff’s office and Camden police.

Sheriff Simpson says the calls seem to be coming from residents in the southern part of Preble County. The common denominator is with transactions made at businesses in the Gratis and Camden areas. Victims say they were notified by their financial institutions of suspected fraud or suspicious activity on their accounts.

“The transactions range anywhere from thirty or so dollars, to several hundred,” said Simpson. “This is a huge deal.” He warned that identity theft is serious and it can take years to clear up.

Sheriff Simpson said the department and Camden Police are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to solve these crimes.

Simpson said, “We’re not sure what that link is other than when they all funnel into a business that processes these cards but these cards are being used all over the country really.”

Simpson offered advice to county residents.

1) Check your accounts online or go to your bank and check for any activity you didn’t authorize.

2) If you find suspicious activity on your account, contact your financial institution and shut down the account.

3) Check your credit report. See if anyone is opening accounts in your name that you’re not aware of. Let them know your identity was compromised.
