Dozens of firearms seized in Greene County

UPDATE @ 7:40 p.m. (June 26): Greene County deputies said they confiscated an estimated 170 firearms from the residence on Schnebly Road.

In a news conference Friday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said the haul, taken via a search warrant, included two 50-caliber sniper rifles and a machine gun.

Sheriff’s Maj. Rick Bowman said the collection of weapons “isn’t probably what you would find as a normal firearms sports enthusiast. I think it goes beyond that.”

Deputies were called to 2902 Schnebly Road on Wednesday afternoon because of a criminal damaging complaint. When they arrived, they contacted the Dayton Bomb Squad because deputies came across potentially explosive devices.

No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made, official said, but the sheriff’s office will contact the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about the weapons.

EARLIER REPORT (June 24)

Our reporters are working to learn more about a Wednesday night incident of what is believed to be an investigation involving explosives.

Deputies, the Dayton Bomb Squad and Spring Valley firefighters were dispatched to 2302 Schnebly Road about 4 p.m. Traffic at Schnebly and Simison roads was closed for several hours after a Spring Valley fire official said they were at the house where a large amount of explosive materials were believed to be located.

Two front loaders and a Greene County services vehicle arrived on scene to remove materials found in the house, including materials a Spring Valley firefighter said were beleived to be explosives or related to explosive devices. One member of the Dayton Bomb Squad said they dug holes on the property, but additional information was not released.

Spring Valley Fire Chief Marvin Moeller said deputies executed a search warrant at the address earlier in the day. He declined to disclose what the deputies were searching for via the warrant.

An adult male who went in and out of the house — he was frisked by deputies at one point — said he would comment but did not. An estimated half-dozen Greene County sheriff’s deputies refused comment as they left the scene.

This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
