“This is a tragic and senseless death of a child at the hands of his caregiver. Parents need to be vigilant when deciding who they trust with the care of their children,” said Prosecutor Mat Heck in a news release.

Evans is in jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week.

Evans is being held on $1 million bond in the Montgomery County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, online jail records show.

Evans is accused in the death of 21-month-0ld Keyontae Ellis, who died Wednesday.

Police said Evans was in the apartment in the 5600 block of Fisher Drive when the young boy was fatally injured.

UPDATE @ 4:35 p.m. (4/10/2015): The adult male who was in the house on Fisher Drive when Keyontae Ellis suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday has been arrested and will be booked into the Montgomery County Jail, Huber Heights police Lt. Matt Dulaney said in a prepared statement.

The name of the 22-year-old male has not been released, pending approval of the charges by the county prosecutor’s office, Dulaney said.

According to the coroner’s office, Keyontae suffered blunt force trauma to his torso and that trauma killed him.

Police have said the 22-year-old was in the apartment with a teenage male when the child was injured. Dulaney, at a news conference this afternoon, said police were told the teenager came later and was not present when the injuries were suffered.

“He hit his head against the wall and just fell,” Markuay Cook, the teenage male, told News Center 7’s Adam Marshall. “He wasn’t standing up straight.”

UPDATE @12:20 p.m. (April 9): The Montgomery County Coroner performed an autopsy this morning on the body of a little boy who died Wednesday. The boy has been identified as 21-month-old Keyontae Ellis. The autopsy results have not been released

UPDATE @ 6:20 p.m. (April 8): The Montgomery County Coroner's Office is to perform an autopsy Thursday on the little boy who was pronounced dead at a hospital within minutes of his being taken — reportedly in distress — from a residence on Fisher Drive.

The incident is being investigated as suspicious because police just aren’t sure yet what happened to the child, Huber Heights Sgt. Chris Kash said. Two males — an adult and a teenager — in the apartment when police and medics arrived are being questioned at police headquarters, while the child’s mother is being questioned at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Kash said no one is in custody, but police were searching the residence as part of the death investigation.

“It’s not a normal investigation because of the age,” Kash said. “Was it a genealogical thing or was it malicious? We don’t know.”

Police are trying to determine whether the adult in the residence is the mother’s boyfriend. Police have learned that the woman moved to the area recently from Chicago, but apparently has no family in the area.

“I think she came home from work and walked into all of this — a child in distress and unconscious.

“The two who were in the apartment are going to be our best bet,” Kash said. “And that’s why we’re doing extensive interviews with them to find out what happened when the child was under their watch.

“If the interviews and the autopsy comes back that something happened that shouldn’t have happened to the child, then obviously we will pick up the investigation and go from there.”

UPDATE @ 5:31 p.m.: The boy has been pronounced dead at Dayton Children's Hospital, a police lieutenant tells us.

UPDATE @ 5:20 p.m.: One of the people in a residence on Fisher Drive where a young boy was injured was the child's mother, a Huber Heights police sergeant said, and she is one of three people police are questioning.

“It’s suspicious because it’s unknown,” Sgt. Chris Kash said. “We just don’t know what happened to the child.”

Police were dispatched to the address in the 5600 block of Fisher Driver on a call about a child in distress, Cash said. Medics arrived at the same time and quickly took the little boy to the hospital.

Police are unaware of any medical condition, Kash said, and police didn’t see any evidence of physical abuse because medics removed the child from the scene quickly to get him to a hospital.

“The child was unconscious but he was still breathing when we arrived,” Kash said. “At this time, we don’t have a status on the child or what happened to cause the child to go into distress.”
